Not On The High Street shoppers – save 30% on a classic poem gift!

Perhaps you’ve hit the high street this week but you’re still looking for a special gift for a son, dad or grandad. We all have that one person who’s a little tricky to buy for… I know I do!

Not On The High Street is a brilliant place to find unique Christmas gifts for everyone – and their selection for men is growing every year. Kipling’s classic poem ‘If’ is one of our favourites, and makes a perfect gift for the man in your life.

The words are inspiring and motivational – they teach courtesy, humility and strength. This is the famous poem which ends with the words ‘You’ll be a man, my son!’ – a phrase I must have written a hundred times in my days as a calligrapher!

This decorative calligraphy poem is printed from a handwritten calligraphy original. It’s hand finished with a modern decorative letter in 22 carat gold leaf.

Now you can buy this poem at a very reduced price in our Not On The High Street shop. The usual price is £85, but for this weekend ONLY it’s reduced by a whopping 30%, bringing the price you’ll pay down to just £59.50!

The full wording of the poem is –

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Beautiful – a bespoke calligraphy gift

I’m often asked to write bespoke calligraphy commissions for wedding presents, anniversary gifts and more. In October Denise got in touch with a very special request for a unique gift – a wedding reading she’d written for Sarah.

It was a joy to write, in a romantic and flowing style which Denise found on my Instagram.

I have received the poem in the post today. Thank you so much, it truly is beautiful.
I am sure Sarah will be thrilled when she recives it next weekend.
You have a fabulous gift, your work is so fabulously presented and it has been a real pleasure doing business with you.
I will certainly come to you again for more bespoke pieces in the future and I will certainly recommend you to my friends.

To order a calligraphy poem as a gift for someone special, please email me – send me a copy of your poem and ask for a quote. Prices for calligraphy commissions start at £75.

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers – Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers by Emily Dickinson in calligraphy

Sometimes I just like to play with my pens and inks, to write a practice piece simply because I enjoy the writing process, with no restrictions on size or letter style.

This poem – always a favourite – is in a very straight (not slanted) calligraphy style. It’s ultra modern and trendy. The letters are curvy though, giving them tons of character and adding to the rhythm of the words.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –

And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.

This is poem is available to buy in my Etsy shop for £49.

Tis a Fearful Thing – calligraphy poem

This poem almost had me in tears.

If you’ve ever lost someone close to you, these words will resonate.

Writing pieces like this in calligraphy is humbling. Every stroke of the pen has to be as perfect as I can possibly make it.

To somehow do justice to this beautiful piece of poetry is a challenge, and I do hope the new owner of this poem will find it brings some measure of solace.

The full wording, as it was sent to me:

‘Tis a Fearful Thing

Yehuda Halevi

‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.
A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
to be,
And oh, to lose.
A thing for fools, this,
And a holy thing,
a holy thing
to love.

For your life has lived in me,
your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.

To remember this brings painful joy.
‘Tis a human thing, love,
a holy thing, to love
what death has touched.
