It’s always an absolute treat to teach calligraphy, and this coming November and December I’ll be hosting a handful of calligraphy classes in Cumbria: in Ulverston, High Newton, Kendal and around Penrith. These calligraphy classes will all be playful and experimental. I will be showing you the calligraphy tools I use, so that you can explore your own beautiful lettering and illustration with them!
Calligraphy workshops are all about beginning your lettering adventures. I try to keep all the sessions really playful and fun, helping you to explore what your new pens and nibs will do. Everyone is different, and some people like to try drawing with calligraphy pens rather than focusing on letters.
That’s why I love teaching calligraphy. I write my own worksheets (which I’ll be doing this afternoon, ready for a private class on Wednesday!) which incorporate as many swirls and flourishes as they do letters. Learning this way takes the focus off ‘handwriting’ and onto something more enjoyable and free!

Every calligraphy workshop is suitable for absolute beginners, or for those with a little experience.
I teach in a contemporary ‘modern calligraphy’ style. This style is based on copperplate calligraphy, but is more informal in style. The script allows you to play with letter shapes and flourishes, adding your own creativity to the pieces of calligraphy you write on the day.
I will also bring along my pop-up shop where you can purchase calligraphy supplies for practice at home: spare nibs and colourful inks, my calligraphy guide book and more!
