A brand new workshop space for me, and a chance to support this independent, charity-run local arts venue.
“I really loved this workshop. Claire is a very inspiring teacher, obviously incredibly talented and this skill does not happen overnight. But Claire imparts her knowledge and enthusiasm to ensure you leave feeling confident to try, practice and develop your own style by using the basic techniques learnt in the workshop. I’m very pleased I attended.” – Kaye
Calligraphy workshop reviews
“I have been to one of Claire’s calligraphy workshops today and it was amazing! Great atmosphere, I felt very relaxed and there was lots of lovely people. Claire has been amazing, taking some time with each and every one of us. Thank you Claire!” – Carla
“A super super experience, with a fab and patient teacher. I booked this as a gift for a friend and myself, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The personalised letter, the beautifully presented personalised calligraphy kit, right down to the presentation of the table, and the teaching, I wish it was a weekly workshop for me to escape to!! Thank you again Claire. x” – Zehra
“A lovely afternoon. I learnt a lot here today, Claire was lovely and very positive. The pack was great!! I have already been practising and improving. I would recommend to anyone interested in calligraphy especially beginners as it was nice and relaxed. : ) ”

Calligraphy classes around the north west of England
I’m always looking for new places to teach and I would love to meet you!
If you can’t find a calligraphy workshop in your area on this list, please send me an email. If I get enough requests from a particular area, I will look into arranging some new workshops!
If you’re aware of a local craft workshop venue (or you own one!) please let me know about it. To arrange a calligraphy workshop I need a space where we can all sit comfortably at nice big tables, with plenty of room to write and for me to demonstrate. I teach a minimum of 8 people per workshop, and a maximum of 20 per session. I charge venues from £35 per person (2025 prices) with exact prices depending on the venue and how far it is for me to travel.
Private and corporate calligraphy workshops
To arrange a private calligraphy workshop for your group or organisation please email me: hello@bymoonandtide.co.uk
If you have a group of friends who are interested in a workshop, let’s arrange something! My contact details are here.
Meeting new people and sharing my craft is one of my favourite things to do. I’ve been teaching modern calligraphy workshops for 8 years, from London via Manchester to some of the loveliest locations in the Lake District. I now teach more local workshops in and around Cumbria. All upcoming dates are listed on this page. New dates will be added as and when they’re agreed with venues.
What are my calligraphy workshops like?
I teach in a relaxed and friendly way. Everyone learns calligraphy at a different pace, so my workshops are designed for absolute beginners who’ve never held a calligraphy pen before.
Over the 11 years I’ve been teaching modern calligraphy classes, I’ve created a set of fun worksheets which will help anyone master the swooshes and swirls of a calligraphy pen and nib. The same set of worksheets are included in some of my calligraphy sets, which are for sale on Not On The High Street and in my Etsy shop.
I give little demonstrations to show what a calligraphy nib and dippy ink can do! Classes include demonstrations where everyone can gather round as I run through the worksheets. I’ll also come to your desk and show you ways to solve any problems you’re having, by demonstrating how to hold the pen at the right angle, the ideal speed for writing calligraphy, and specific exercises like letter shapes and joining up.

I’ve been lucky to have some wonderful photographers attend my calligraphy workshops (and document my changing hair colour!) over the years, so please enjoy the photos and video below which I hope give a taster of learning modern calligraphy with me.
