A summer flower border for a personalised calligraphy poem

A new commission of a wedding reading, commissioned to make a special anniversary. My customer’s son had read this poem at their wedding ceremony, and so we added his name to make a really personal calligraphy commission.

The ink is a green so dark it’s almost black (my customer requested ‘blacky-green’) and the florals, in contrast, are light and delicate.

This poem was taken word for word from a print my customer already had in her home. We discussed different flower options, including soft, frilly garden roses, daisies, fennel, lisianthus and loose delphiniums for this piece, inspired by a floral decorated calligraphy poem I’d written in the springtime for a special mum.

My customer asked for a special paper: a light cream rather than white, for a warmer feel. I sent samples by post – my usual calligraphy paper, which is a natural white, super smooth and perfect for calligraphy, as well as an Italian watercolour paper, which has a softer edge and weighs a little more. This was the paper we used for the final piece, and it worked beautifully.

The final poem was rolled and gift wrapped, so my customer could have it framed locally. This is a wise choice if you prefer a glass frame – they’re more traditional and dangerous to post. I knew this customer had a strong preference for vintage frames in a specific style, so while I do offer framing, it felt right for her to visit a framer to choose her own frame in person.

I love illustrating these delicate, pastel coloured florals. They work beautifully with the pale gold border line, which I add in my favourite ‘moon gold’ metallic ink.

If you’d like to order a similar poem commission, please do get in touch! Ordering calligraphy is a lovely process and I have twenty years’ experience working with lovely people like you to transform meaningful words into beautiful pieces of calligraphy art. I’d love to help you do the same.
