Calligraphy family trees made super simple, perfect for easy and thoughtful gifting!

Genealogy buffs, this article’s not for you! I do write those big, dated and detailed family trees, but today I wanted to tell people about my simpler family trees. I know a lot of people would love to have a family tree commissioned, but are looking for something affordable and modern. Perhaps you just want a lovely family tree art print which will look at home on your walls (rather than the kind of thing you’d see in a stately home or an aristocratic pad!) I have just the kind of family tree you’re looking for!

  • Bright, joyful colours
  • Anything from 5 to 25 names
  • No need to research dates
  • First names only for an informal family tree
  • A meaningful title for your family
  • Simple, modern frame style
  • Quick delivery – ready within a week or two!

When I first started selling family trees I wanted them to be available for normal families, so people just like me could buy them for grandparents and parents. The pricing had to be affordable, and the style had to be special – with bright colours and a nice, elegant design to suit any welcoming family home.

My first family tree was designed in collaboration with Welsh artist Amy Swann. It features two birds in a pretty spring tree with a hint of cherry blossom. The beautifully painted branches have room for up to 25 names, and there’s space for a title and a personalised family message beneath the branches of the tree.

The most popular family tree headings are:

  • Our Family Tree
  • Mum / Dad / Grandma / Grandad’s Family Tree
  • Established 1976
  • Rooted in love
  • Home is where the love is

How many names does a family tree need to have?

You can order a piece of modern family tree art with as few as 5 names, or as many as 25. Unlike formal family trees, these joyful prints are simply there to celebrate everyone you love most of all in the world: your nearest and dearest – literally! So include whoever you want to – from grandparents, parents, aunties and uncles, siblings and sons and daughters. If there’s room, I highly recommend including your furry family members too!

How should the names on an informal family tree be organised?

Most people put the oldest generation at the top of a modern family tree, with the youngest generations at the bottom. The beauty of a modern family tree print is there’s no set way you have to arrange the names. If you want your Dads’ names at the centre of the tree, that’s fine! Or if Grandma is the queen of your family’s world and you’re buying a family tree to celebrate her, you could even have her name as the title of the tree, loud and proud!

What’s the best style of family tree for an anniversary or special birthday gift?

The simplest idea is to pick out the colour of your family tree. Anniversaries make this easy! For example, my golden yellow family tree works out perfectly for a golden (50th)wedding anniversary. My autumnal / red toned family tree is lovely for a ruby wedding (40th). I have two blue family trees – perfect for 45th and 65th (sapphire) anniversary gifting. Then there’s emerald anniversaries (55 years), for which either of my green family trees would make a super thoughtful and superbly colour matched gift!

A first wedding anniversary is cotton in the UK, and paper in the US – although here in the UK we’re adopting the US tradition more and more. (Top tip: check with your partner before your 1st anniversary!) And if you know a couple who’ve been married for 80 years, oak is very fittingly the symbol for that anniversary – and what better to celebrate the occasion than a beautiful family tree!

Where to buy a modern family tree gift

I’m proud to be a partner of Not On The High St, selling my family trees online.

The ordering process is really simple: have a think about the names you’d like on your family tree, then fill in my order form with numbered positions. There’s a diagram on Not On The High St to help you with where the names will fit, and I’ll send a digital proof so you can check your family tree before I write it in calligraphy.
